Sunday Church Series - Saint-Étienne-du-Mont

This is one of my favorite churches in Paris, and that says a lot. If you're in Paris and visiting the Panthéon, take the time to walk behind to this beautiful church. Pay your respects to the remains of Saint Genevieve and take in the exquisite  details here.

Des milliers de visages

Last November, as we left Luxembourg Gardens and started our walk towards the Panthéon, we noticed that the dome had been wrapped in a sea of faces during the renovation which has been ongoing for some two years. Last night as I researched this, I learned that not just the façade, but the interior is clad in even more. The credit goes to someone I have admired for several years, JR. I first learned of him through his Inside Out Projects around the world. I have even tried to start one here in my hometown of Birmingham. JR's work is amazing, and I'm thrilled he has been given this beautiful space for yet another innovative project. Have a look HERE at the photos! Now try and imagine how disappointed I am that I did not get a ticket and go inside and see the other installations! How do you say, "I could kick myself!" in French?

Luckily we had another chance to view this spectacular building on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Sunday before, it was dark and rainy. That said, we loved it in rain and shine.

Festooned

Not all of the decorations are over the top in Paris. I always love the simple but festive decorations as well.  Here at the Panthéon, the cluster of trees sparkle with just ribbon bows blowing in the breeze.

I have felt like these tourists at the Panthéon many times.  I think if I didn't travel with such energetic friends I would have done this very thing!

If you've visited the Panthèon, or seen the movie Midnight in Paris, you will recognize this beautiful church. This gorgeous Sunday afternoon, the sky made a beautiful backdrop.

Église Etienne du Mont

Ceiling detail

Wednesday I posted a photograph from the necropolis of the Panthéon, so this Sunday I thought you might enjoy seeing Église Etienne du Mont. Adjacent to the Panthéon , it contains the shrine of St. Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris . As I visited the many churches in France, I began to notice the gorgeous ceiling details of each and every one. I thought this one was especially beautiful.

La Nécropole du Panthéon

Orginally the Panthéon was built as a church dedicated to the patron saint of Paris, St. Genevieve. Today it is used for some liturgical functions, but it is mainly known as a famous burial place. The inscription above the entrance states, "Aux Grands Hommes La Patrie Reconnaissante" ( To the great men, the grateful homeland). Indeed, this is the final resting place for France's most revered heroes and one heroine, Madame Marie Curie. ( Of note, there are several other women that were buried alongside their husbands) This photograph was taken when Peter and I visited the necropolis. The Panthéon is in the 5th and is a site not to be missed. Be sure and visit the *Église Saint Etienne du Mont nearby while you are there.
