Sunday Paris Church Series - Asking Forgiveness

Recently my friend Peter Olson posted a collage of views of the Sacré Coeur from different vantage points all over Paris. He pointed out that photos were not allowed INSIDE. Oh my, I have to confess (it is a Catholic basilica) that I mistakenly took a number of photos inside the church in 2013, not knowing that photos were not prohibited. This is the only church in Paris that I'm aware of, that doesn't let you take photographs. Lesson learned, but please enjoy the magnificent mosaic dome.

I hope you'll share more of those! Seems like there are more and more of the photo police in such places now! I'm not quite sure why they have that rule -- I understand the no flash and some restrictions... but you bring to us something so beautiful that many have not been able to experience personally, and it is a great gift.

Keep shooting, Virginia. I mean, what are "they" going to do with you. And your photos won't hurt a thing. Might even bring them more visitors and "presence" in the city. As we teachers used to say, "Don't ask for permission; do what you need to do and then ask forgiveness!

Is there a bounty out on you? Nice shots quand même.

The Basilica is devoted to perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament--that's why photos are not allowed. The Blessed Sacrament, the source and summit of the Catholic faith, is exposed in the monstrance above the high altar. If you went to a Mosque and they forbade photos, I'm sure you wouldn't take photos, nor would anyone encourage you to.

Good for you—and us! I've taken pictures in there too, before it was interdit. But I never ever used flash (as neither would you).

Stephanie, thank you for this information. As I said, I didn't not see the signs and took the photos unknowingly. Of course had I known, I would not have done so.
