As we left le Reminet, I wandered ahead and found these two lovely girls enjoy a smoke and a little girl talk. I thought about taking the photo without them seeing me, but instead asked for permission and they agreed. I love their smiles!
You can tell they are giggling about the photo session... I would like to take more impromptu shots of people in the streets but am always afraid to intrude. I fear that if i ask for permission, people will start posing.... Ah the dilemma. What say you, Master? Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)
Portraits are best (usually) in b/w and this one is a treat. I think that once you are seen, it is best to ask permission. Well, unless they are on a balcony and you can outrun them....
Veronique, you are right, sometimes the sight of my camera puts people in pose mode. i try to just smile and chat a little and put them at ease. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. I usually say just go on and do what you were doing. I hate a stiff pose with tight grin as much as you do~!
Has anyone ever been foolish enough to turn down having their portrait taken by you, V? This one's great (they all are), and I love the light and shadows here too.
I am a former elementary school teacher, a full-time photographer, lover of all things French ( whose French is slowly improving), obsessive Paris traveler, enthusiastic church and community volunteer, and grandmother to 5 delightful grandchildren.
I fell in love with Paris in March 2007. It was as the French say, le coup de foudre : love at first sight. As a result of that trip, my photography took another direction. Since that time I have pursued a career of sorts in photography and dreamed of returning to the City of Light. November 2008 found me strolling the streets of Paris once again. My first visit I was so overwhelmed with the incredible beauty of the city, I photographed it as a "tourist". In 2008 I returned and I looked at the city with more of a photographer's eye. I wanted to capture the unique, the small details, and oh yes - the people! This blog was started as a photo diary of that trip, but I have been most fortunate to return to the city j'adore 15 times since. Each time I leave, I wipe a tear and start planning my list for the next trip. Paris may well be a moveable feast, but I think it's best savored in person! Someone told me that once you have been to Paris, you will leave a piece of your heart. I left mine right there, but I brought home some wonderful memories. It is my pleasure to share them with you.

I don´t smoke, but I love how people in Paris enjoy a smoke and often also a chat in the streets.

I'm in love with that first song on your line-up with Jacques Dutronc and Francoise!

The strong light really works here. Even though I am not a fan of black and white usually, it works nicely here.
Actually the photo looks like they had no idea they were being photographed! Perfect!
Love them Virginia... so cute and happy together... Girl time... girl talk... it's the best... xv
I hope that they visit your blog and see the great job you did with their image.
Fabulous image Virginia - I love B+W too - the shadows and how it shows the light on their hair - magic.
But oh how the French love to smoke.....
xo

It almost looks a little retro Virginia, like it was taken in the 40's.. Love it, only French women can make smoking seem sexy oui!
Nice!!! I think they're a little self conscious!!!
