Jardin des Plantes I

Today we move to another of Paris' beautiful gardens. We discovered the Jardin des Plantes in June, 2009, when my daughter and I were staying in the 5eme with her two children, ages 4 and 7. That summer we found many fun things to do in Paris with children.

The Jardin des Plantes is Paris' botanical gardens and includes a small zoo, carrousel , and the extraordinary National Museum of Natural History. 

Le Dodo Manege carrousel features a delightful collection of extinct and endangered animals. This is a must when you travel to Paris with children.

Today, the first of the month is our THEME DAY. Paris has an abundance of parks so I chose one that most visitors might never discover. Square Georges Cain is located on a quiet side street in the Marais. Put it on your list.

January Afternoon - la Fontaine Médicis

Paris is probably the most photographed city on the planet.  I don't fool myself that I could ever find a new point of view that someone has not already discovered.  It doesn't keep me from the eternal search however!

This crisp, January Sunday afternoon, Mary and I made our way through Luxembourg Gardens. We were grateful that not many tourists spoiled our view.   This image of the Medici Fountain  brings back some wonderful memories.

The Jardin des Plantes is a lovely spot to spend the day.  The shady allées, the well tended gardens and in addition there is a dear little carrousel and zoo for the children.

An Afternoon at the Jardin des Plantes

We're having a little trouble getting up in the mornings so our "day" usually starts around 12:30ish. Today we walked to the Jardin des Plantes. It is a short stroll from our apartment. We've decided to pace ourselves here since we will be coming often. Today we visited the "menagerie". A quaint little zoo, it doesn't have a wide variety of animals, but we found the grounds well kept and the accomodations for the animals much nicer than the zoo at home. Of interest to me was the fact that there were many, many school groups, as young as preschool, and the children were a tad "wild"! I almost lapsed into "teacher mode" a few times but got a grip on myself.

While we did not by any means see the entire gardens , I hope my photos today will give you a little taste. Enjoy!

For those of you interested in the weather, today was overcast and pretty chilly by Alabama standards. We are NOT COMPLAINING! After the first few days of heat, we are pleased. Tomorrow's forecast is mid 50's!

# 6 of my 100 French Strangers Challenge. This gardener at the Jardin des Plantes took some time explaining that that portion of the garden was planted with fragrant plants to attract butterflies. He told me the names of all them!
