It seems that faithful pétanque players enjoy their game year round. In fact, I think I recognized several of these players from previous trips. This very chilly Sunday, they donned jackets and scarves and seemed to be having a bit of a discussion, which I've observed, happens quite often.

Paris je t'aime
I fell in love with Paris in March 2007. It was as the French say, le coup de foudre : love at first sight. As a result of that trip, my photography took another direction. Since that time I have pursued a career of sorts in photography and dreamed of returning to the City of Light. November 2008 found me strolling the streets of Paris once again. My first visit I was so overwhelmed with the incredible beauty of the city, I photographed it as a "tourist". In 2008 I returned and I looked at the city with more of a photographer's eye. I wanted to capture the unique, the small details, and oh yes - the people! This blog was started as a photo diary of that trip, but I have been most fortunate to return to the city j'adore 15 times since. Each time I leave, I wipe a tear and start planning my list for the next trip. Paris may well be a moveable feast, but I think it's best savored in person! Someone told me that once you have been to Paris, you will leave a piece of your heart. I left mine right there, but I brought home some wonderful memories. It is my pleasure to share them with you.

"Alors, tu pointes ou tu tires?!" -- Ah, la pétanque, a national sport. It seems almost funny to see how bundled up these men are. To me, la pétanque is a sport best played on la place du village, on a sunny day. Great shot, Virginia. They were too busy to notice the camera! Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)
Great shot - Its pleasing to see people enjoy themselves and commit to getting together, regardless of the weather.
OH YES! Pétanque is VERY SERIOUS! I saw a match in St. Paul de Vence and it was fascinating to watch how INTENT and FOCUSED these players are!!!! Anita
Ah, the Parisians and their scarves! I will be searching out the Pétanque players in a few weeks, and I am glad to see that they are all-weather guys!

it seems that is very cold there?
I feel cold just looking at them all bundled up! Love the way you captured the intensity of their discussion.
That day I wore a turtleneck, outer sweater and pashmina and these gentlemen had on far more! I think the French have ice water in their veins!! BTW, the player with the baseball cap was in the first group of pétanque players I photographed in June '09.
Le titre va parfaitement avec l'image, superbe!
Wow I admire their dedication Virginia! They do look a picture standing there so seriously studying the form.
Put more than 2 men in a sport setting and you get a debate
You got a great urban scene. In Brazil we also found people who gather in the streets to play various games.

No matter the weather, the place,the city, the hour, when they have to play, they play!And if they talk, it's because , often, they may or may not win a lot of money, never forget it!
As long as they remain friends and keep on playing together—which apparently they do, despite their "debates." Nicely captured, V.
I'm glad to see they had the good sense to wear warm clothing. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen people walking around the city in T-shirts in the middle of winter.
There is nothing quite so serious as Frenchmen playing pétanque. It makes Middle East Peace Talks look like a game of Go Fish.
The company is more important than the game. That's the excuse to get together.
