Coming Back to Life

I never had the pleasure of visiting la Samaritaine before it closed in 2005. Now it's under a grand renovation to transform the former department store in the Art Nouveau style to a upscale hotel with rooftop bar. Other parts will become a"luxury supermarket, featuring a sleek wavy glass front. It will be exciting to see when completed. Paris always finds a way to keep the old while mixing in the contemporary.

I can imagine the final result will be worth a visit.

I used to go there often when I was a student in the city. They had a fantastic rooftop café with some of the best views, and it was seldom crowded. But that was way back in 1982. Imagine!

I had the pleasure of visiting prior to its closure. I'm pleased to hear that they will keep the rooftop cafe. My guess is that it will be upgraded to 'posh'. We were just watching a Jason Bourne re-run and what did I spy - La Samaritaine. So many great Paris memories!
