Les trésors de Paris - Sainte-Chapelle

The fires at Notre Dame this week,  made me more mindful of all the other historical, religious, architectural treasures I think we take for granted in Paris. I've only visited Sainte-Chapelle once in 2008. I hope I will be able to visit Paris again and spend time in this beautiful sacred space.

Sunday Church Series - Sainte Chappelle

Sainte Chappelle, one of the most beautiful churches in Paris. I have visited once, but have it on my list for another and hopefully a concert!

Sunday Church Series - Église Saint-Augusti

I spotted this church, with a red steeple,  from the bus on the way into Paris from the airport. Mary, Peter and I visited later that day! A lovely church, not often mentioned in guide books, but worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood.

Sunday Church Series - Basilique royale de Saint-Denis

Walking into this amazing basilica and seeing the afternoon sun streaming through the stained glass windows is a sight I will never forget.

Today I happily join James' Weekend Reflections right here!

Sunday Church Series - Basilica Saint Denis

Located about 5.8 miles north of Paris, the Basilica Saint Denis is noted for it's Gothic architecture and as the final resting place for most of France's kings, queens and their families from the 10-18th centuries.  As we entered the church that afternoon I stopped in awe as the sun streaming through the beautiful stained glass windows created the most amazing rainbow of colors on the walls.

Our friend Owen and his delightful wife Anne joined us that day.  He has a marvelous post with such wonderful images today at his Magic Lantern Show blog. Please drop over and see them.

Notre Dame de Paris

This Sunday I've selected two photographs of Cathédrale Notre Dame taken in March, 2007. I realize that these two shots are not exactly the most original , but I've not been inside since that time. Both were taken with the trusty Nikon Cool Pix camera I was using at the time. I think this rose window is one of the most beautiful I've seen anywhere. I like the bottom photograph as it illustrates the difference between the number of tourists in March and in June! Perhaps if you've been fortunate enough to visit Notre Dame this will bring back some nice memories.

Église Saint Sevarin

Église Saint Severin in the 5th arrondisement is located around the corner from Blvd. St. Germain. Built in the 6th century, this lesser known church is a must. Of special note must be the set of seven stained glass windows in the ambulatory. Designed in 1966 by artist Jean Bazaine, they were inspired by the sacraments of the Catholic church. These especially vibrant windows are a beautiful compliment to the ancient church interior. The distinctive twisted palm columns are unusual as well. Saint Severin is now used mainly for classical and sacred music concerts. My thanks to my friend Mary Gilbert for making sure I didn't miss this special place.
