Sunday Paris Church Series - Notre Dame de Paris

While photographing Notre Dame organist Vincent Dubois last November, he was kind enough to take Mary and me to this "gallery" to photograph. This is an area that the public is not allowed and was empty except for some pews along the side. This allowed for some wonderful photographs with an unusual point of view.

Sunday Church Series - The American Cathedral in Paris

The residence of the Dean of the Cathedral is located above the enclosed courtyard. I always enjoy attending services there when I visit Paris. This trip, Mary and I will be attending a mass at Notre Dame de Paris as we will be meeting Vincent Dubois, one of the organists. I am hoping to be able to photograph him play during the mass. He will be playing a recital at Independent Presbyterian Church here in February.

Sunday Church Series - Almost There!

If you have ever made the trek to the dome of the Sacre Coeur, you know this very spot. When after what seems like hours...days...of climbing the winding stairs, you find yourself outside on the rooftops with this view. It's a welcome breath of fresh air, but alas, you must go back and climb many more steps. I've made this twice and there will NOT be another climb for me, but I have many photos!

Sunday Church Series - Église Saint-Augusti

I spotted this church, with a red steeple,  from the bus on the way into Paris from the airport. Mary, Peter and I visited later that day! A lovely church, not often mentioned in guide books, but worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood.

Sunday Church Series - Les bougies

The Église Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis  ( 1621) in the Marais. I"ve lost count on how many times I've walked into this sweet church. It's not the largest or the grandest church in Paris, but well worth a visit.

Sunday Paris Church Series - Asking Forgiveness

Recently my friend Peter Olson posted a collage of views of the Sacré Coeur from different vantage points all over Paris. He pointed out that photos were not allowed INSIDE. Oh my, I have to confess (it is a Catholic basilica) that I mistakenly took a number of photos inside the church in 2013, not knowing that photos were not prohibited. This is the only church in Paris that I'm aware of, that doesn't let you take photographs. Lesson learned, but please enjoy the magnificent mosaic dome.

Sunday Church Series - Église Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis

I try and always stop in this pretty church on rue St. Antoine, when I'm in the Marais. I love the contrast of the warm candle light against the cool gray figure.

Sunday Paris Church Series - Basilique du Sacré-Coeur

While the rest of my group headed inside the beautiful Basilique du Sacré-Coeur, I stood outside the doors and became enchanted with the ceiling. It's a photographer's thing. Many of you will understand.

Sunday Church Series - Église-Saint-Julien-le- Pauvre

This Melkite Greek Catholic parish church is one of Paris' oldest churches, built in the 13th century.  Located behind the Square René Viviani, just across the bridge from Notre Dame, it's not one of Paris' grandest but certainly should be one to put on your list to visit while in Paris.

Sunday Church Series - La Crèche

I'm always interested to see that some of the most magnificent cathedrals in Paris, often have the most humble and unusual crèches on display.  The glorious Basilica de Saint Denis, featured this one on the stairs leading up to the altar.

Sunday Church Series - La porte

I think often we're so anxious to get inside the beautiful churches of Paris that we overlook the obvious.  The doors are just as interesting as the interiors.  Stop and enjoy.

Sunday Church Series - Voilà

Completed in 1641, the Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis church was in serious need of some restoration work.  When we visited in January 2012, the front facade was covered.  What a nice surprise to see the work completed when we passed last month.  The stonework has been cleaned and now you can really see the marvelous details.  Of course the new choice of rouge for the doors pleased me very much indeed!

Sunday Church Series - Église Saint Séverin

The afternoon light in this small, contemporary chapel  is a quiet place for prayer. This in one of my favorite churches in Paris. I love the very contemporary stained glass windows and unusual columns. Next  Sunday, I will share those photos.
