Portes des mausolées III

TOday we move to the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise. I have visited many times and still feel like I just scratched the surface. It is enormous. If you are in Paris for a while, it's worth it. If you're only there for a few days, I'd tour Passy or Montparnasse.

la Coix

Cimetière Père-Lachaise, the largest cemetery in the city of Paris. As my cemetery expert, Owen Phillips likes to say, "Père Llachaise is the moss capital of the world!"

Un souvenir

Rather than flowers that will wilt too quickly, we often see these fronds that seem to be palms tucked into the doors of the mausoleums as here, at Père Lachaise.

Le Docteur

Cimetière Père-Lachaise

Does the name Auguste Moog seem familiar? Of course it does.  Docteur Moog wrote the wildly successful Les eliminations urinaires dans le néphrites subaigües,  in 1903.  I was a little disappointed as I had hoped he'd written on the subject of mustaches.

Faire attention !

The cobblestoned pathways at Cimetière Pére Lachaise terrified me.  I was certain that despite my very sensible walking shoes, I was going to turn my ankle and get to see first hand how the French health care system really works.  I spotted these two very fashionable ladies dressed in their beautiful high heeled boots and just gazed in amazement and appreciation. How do they do it??

Le plus grand cimetière

Paris' largest resting place, Cimetière du Père Lachaise, bien sûr.  If you are going to be in Paris for a while, this is the one you should see. If a short visit, there are many other smaller ones that you can visit.

Vert en janvier

On this cold and damp day in January, the green moss made Père Lachaise come alive.

To Oscar With Love

Fans of Oscar Wilde have an odd way of showing their affection.  His gravestone is covered with lipstick kisses at Paris' Père Lachaise Cemetery.  Apparently the lipstick is causing deterioration of the marker and despite signage asking visitors to refrain, they can't seem to help themselves.  I just don't understand it at all.

I'm pleased to offer my newest calendar:  Blanc et Noir en Paris 2011 through Red Bubble! Of course if you want a color Paris calendar, just look on the sidebar, la Boutique!

Cimitière Père-Lachaise, Another Look

There is so much to photograph at the beautiful Cimitière Pére-Lachaise. This is one of my favorite photographs although I'm not sure what it is. It could of course be a mausoleum, but looks more like a small chapel. We must await Mary Gilbert's or another Paris expert's verdict on this one.

Today, I really couldn't decide between the color and the monochrome. Votre choix

Cimitière Père-Lachaise

Today's photo of the lovely Cimitière Père-Lachaise is dedicated to my Cincinnati ami Phil Nuxhall. Phil is the curator of the beautiful and well known Spring Grove Cemetery there, and he's written a new book- Beauty In the Grove: Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum. Unfortunately we didn't have Phil along on the day we visited Père Lachaise , but we had the next best thing, Mary Gilbert! Mary's a docent at Spring Grove and is quite the authority on Parisian cemeteries as well. She gave us a wonderful tour. Merci mon amie!

Cimetière Père- Lachaise

Just home and it's been a very long day, but wanted to give you at least one new photo. Friday, we toured the well known Cimetière Père - Lachaise. We were lucky to have our own expert, Mary Gilbert, right there to give us all the interesting tidbits. Today's photo is dedicated to you Mar, for planning such a great trip for us!
