I first visited
E Dehellerin in the summer of 2009. I met and became instant friends with the gentleman on the right. He'd met some ladies from Birmingham once and when he heard I was from there, he said, "Madame, when I come to Birmingham, what is the first thing I should see?" My answer...."Moi!" He loved that and was nice enough to
pose outside for photos. When I returned this last January, I took him the photo. Here you can see he was proudly showing it to his co-workers.
You are so quick with snappy answers. That is so funny I have to admire you for your quick wit and gutsy way! Right on...You got it right! Look how proud he is of you!
ReplyDeleteA funny story! and I like the picture, very "alive"!
ReplyDeleteGreat story, V. "Monsieur" is a character! You were bound to be friends ;-) Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you remembered to give him the photo...they all look very interested in it. Life is full of such niceties.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly seem engrossed in conversation. What a wonderful response ... "moi"..
ReplyDeleteOne day, I'll look for TOI 'a Birmingham, too, V de B!
ReplyDeleteUn magasin vraiment magnifique.
ReplyDeleteI like your way of getting friendly with every one and to return to see them with their photos! That's really charming and certainly much appreciated!
ReplyDeletea very Virginia thing to do!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture and I like the story a lot, thanks for sharing!

OMG you crack me up! You have captured these characters perfectly. Aren't they fun? For the 20 years I have shopped at Dehillerin they have always been there!
ReplyDeleteHow quick witted you are, Virginia! I think I would have been tongue tied if asked that question. It's a great photo. He and the others certainly look like they think its pretty great too!
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteThis is an instant friend-maker, break-the-ice, and language-equalizer. Peter even got shots of me taking photos to my former portrait subjects. There is nothing like seeing "the lights come on" in another's eyes when they see a photo of themselves.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely on the same wave length today!
The joy of making friends! Always a highlight of any trip. Are those Elvis sideburns???
ReplyDeleteSo expressive—and even better when you go back and see what it is they're looking at!
ReplyDeletePour l'amour de la photo... merveilleux.
ReplyDeleteGros bisous
I had seen something like this on Genie's before and thought it was wonderful to take the photo back..
ReplyDeleteIt is very considerate
Photography enhances worldwide friendships is the conclusion I arrive at today.

Virginia,
ReplyDeleteI'm leaving for Paris Wednesday, and E. Dehellerin is one of the stores I wanted to check out. Is it within walking distance to the Louvre?
I was in the Birmingham Botanical Garden in Feb. Unfortunately, it was too early for the cherry blossoms. Oh well.
Funny and touching story with a sequel. So the Strangers # x,y,z are not strangers any more. How good to find the same faces at the same place some time later down the road and meet a friendly smile...
ReplyDeleteWonderful anecdote Virginia! You leave Wednesday? Oh you lucky girl you!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat shot! Love the way he's holdig it!

ReplyDeleteSuch a tres, tres French image Virginia, I can just imagine their charming and enthusiastic response to your picture. Love it!
