When monsieur spotted me with my camera, he stood up and in better English than my French, explained that he was preparing to do a Picasso chalk portrait. He fetched a copy of the original and told me,"You come back in three hours and it will be finished." I said, "Au revoir", went across the bridge and returned later that afternoon, to ooh and ahh over this lovely masterpiece!

ReplyDeleteThe photo was taken in front of the École nationale des beaux-arts so it's seems appropriate that the artist chose this place to practice his skill along the river Seine indeed.
Will you allow me two remarks?
1°- The simplest first. When you tell "au revoir" to someone it means you may see h/h again someday (tomorrow for example at the bakery's) (contrary to "Adieu" which of course you know means "to God" -eg we'll never see again). In your case "à tout-à-l'heure" was the thing to say since it indicates you'll meet the person again within the hour or at least in a few hours later on the same day.
2°- Monsieur written with a capital M is the way servants address to their master (or refer to them) among the very high bourgeoisie (Remember ''The Rules of the Game'' by Jean Renoir).
To make a long story short, presenting this man as "Monsieur" is a tad too ceremonious and referential.
I regularly follow your blog which shows you have a way with your photo camera. Keep on the good work.

At the time I really had no real plans and only decided to go back later in the day as I was so curious so maybe I can get by with that, "au revoir", or maybe not! :)
