And I learned firsthand how the French health care system works when I tripped on a street barricade's support leg and landed on my right cheek and forehead. I never felt the metal support with my foot because my sensible shoes were so think, so I flew through the air and landed on my face, as one of my students explained later on to this Mama. Needless to say, my glasses were broken in two, I had busted place above my right eye, and a split beneath that same eye. Ended up in a fancy dress shop on Rue de Rivoli--we'd just been to the Louvre--waiting for the paramedics and the ambulance. They took me to the hospital which I seem to remember is in front of and to the right of Notre Dame, as you've got your back to the cathedral. Six stitches, an X-ray, and a tetanus shot, plus the ambulance and the paramedics, $50. The pain meds cost about the same. I was amazed and, since I didn't land on my nose and push it into my brain and kill myself, I have a story to tell. You know how much we Southerners love to tell stories! I've got to go catch the bus soon, or I'd type the whole thing out for you right now.
